Death Valley is based on the Year Zero Engine and you'll need a pool of D6s to play.
If you have experienced the joy of playing a TTRPG (tabletop role-playing games) by Free League then you will be familiar with the Year Zero Engine mechanics.
YZE is an elegant set of mechanics which simply uses a pool of D6s. In my experience it is straight forward to pick up and play. The number of D6s you roll is determined by your skill proficiency and a success is rolling a 6. Everything else is unsuccessful. There is also the collaborative aspect. Should you be fortunate enough to roll more than one 6, then you can pass this on to someone in the party.
This is a very simplistic overview and you can read more at the link above.
